About LKDT

Lake Kyoga Development Trust (LKDT) is a member-based organization registered in Uganda as a corporate body in 2018 under the Trustees incorporation Act, Cap. 165. In 1962 Uganda became independent. The nationals were optimistic of total peace and economic development guided by post-independence political leaders. However, their hopes were short-lived for only four years until 1966 when the then Prime Minister of Uganda abrogated the 1962 independence Constitution that was in force. The renowned pigeon-hole Constitution was introduced declaring the then Federal Government of Uganda, a Republic.

Political instability ensued culminating into several violent means of change of government. Warring parties led to unnecessary blood shed of innocent citizens. The civil unrest and political conflicts were largely fueled by external forces whose intention was to make sales of their weaponry at the expense of the country’s resources and blood of innocent citizens. The instability persisted for almost three decades and this eroded the social, moral, health, economic and cultural fibre of Ugandans. Institutions collapsed. Lawlessness escalated everywhere in the country until the return of political sanity through armed struggle of exiled citizens. This was followed by the promulgation, in 1995, of the new Constitution of the Republic of Uganda thereby rekindling the era of democratic elections and governance and trust in government institutions.

In view of the aforementioned therefore, LKDT intends to communicate with superpowers and other relevant countries that may intervene in violent political conflicts amidst any warrying parties so as to conduct regular dialogue with senior citizens in order to generate the real causes and appropriate solutions to restrain the undesirable violent political situations in our countries. Scenarios of Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, South Sudan, Libya, among others, should not be replicated elsewhere in Africa as it seemingly appears. It is envisaged that proper communication with intervening superpowers is likely to yield immeasurable advantages in terms of suppression of heavy losses of property and innocent lives in the country during violent political conflicts. Therefore, LKDT strongly believes that senior citizens of Uganda who have witnessed various manifestations of political events in the country, should be provided with an opportunity for dialogues with the intervening superpowers to get to know the substance of the real story/source of political conflict and also to advise on the best mitigation measures to the conflict situations. Efforts of LKDT are therefore geared towards promoting economic development, peace, tranquility and ensuring that the citizens are critically sensitized to observe and maintain peace so that they can concentrate on efforts of development as specified in the objectives. LKDT was formed to benefit the communities of Uganda by pursuing the following objectives;

  • To redress social exclusion (through empowering individuals, groups, communities and local enterprise)
  • To redress financial exclusion (through local procurement, financial intermediation, advice, training and job creation)
  • To generate wealth (through developing agricultural, financial, social and property enterprises)
  • To protect the environment (through recycling, tree planting and preservation of historic as well as heritage sites)
  • To empower the youth (through advancement of sports, education and training, arts and culture, recreation and enhancement of environment, social and economic wellbeing)
  • To mobilize and sensitize masses on regional and continental integration.

LKDT’s Guiding Philosophy.

LKDT recognizes the value and need to work in harmony with the national development goals; in so doing, we will at times deliver high quality services. We will strive to offer value for money in all our initiatives. LKDT will be a leader in attracting eco-friendly investments while exhibiting concern for all. We value efficiency and formal communication as a means of providing timely and accurate information to all.

Lake Kyoga Development Trust (LKDT) developed a strategic plan to advance her purpose and mission in a systematic way covering the period from 2022 to 2028. The approach is expected to ease the implementation process of LKDT’s activities and programmes in a comprehensible manner. During the period of implementation, LKDT’s strategies will be based on seven key result areas, namely;

  1. Redressing social exclusion;
  2. Redressing financial exclusion;
  3. Generation of wealth;
  4. Environment protection;
  5. Empowerment of the youth together with other vulnerable categories of people;
  6. Mobilization and sensitization on regional and Continental Integration; and
  7. Establishing Eco City and Special Economic zones.

This strategic plan was developed after a series of consultative meetings and involvement of various stakeholders. It is the first strategic plan of LKDT. Further a SWOT analysis was carried out to establish the magnitude of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats in order to determine the best way forward for achieving the stated objectives of LKDT. In addition, an analysis of stakeholders was undertaken to determine the anticipated impact of stakeholders on LKDT.

Several assumptions were made including the following;

  • Funds will be available at all stages of the strategic plan.
  • Stakeholders will be affirmatively responsive.
  • The political environment will be supportive and friendly.
  • The legal frame work will be friendly.
  • The dynamics of the economy will be favourable.
  • The Covid-19 pandemic will not significantly distort the operations of LKDT.
